  1. My classmates seemed to like the idea of using pop art to convey a complex topic, so I continued with my idea of the painting. However, there were some concerns on making the topic understandable. I put extra effort into the description and attempted to make sure it was as understandable as possible. In addition, I made a mistake on the terminology I was using, so I made sure to fix this mistake and be completely accurate. Lastly, I was told to describe the painting in my description and specifically explain what each part of the painting means, to avoid misinterpretations and stereotyping. I made sure to detail the painting and submitted it for revising before submitting my final draft of the description.

    1. That was a great improvement on your project by making sure it would be able to mean what it should mean since the project was already so nice you just fixed any and all risks that might have brought down the level of your piece.

    2. Glad we caught a misinterpretation in class and fixed it, one tricky part of making art to reflect research is that any misinterpretation of your art could lead to people making incorrect assumptions in the future.

    3. Similar to you, I went back to my descriptions in order to make my topic more understandable. I went back and rewrote parts in order to make sure that they made sense, and I also made sure that my descriptions were accurate to the science that it was trying to communicate.

    5. It’s good that presenting your project to the class helped find a mistake in terminology as this would have greatly affected the accuracy of your final project. Feedback on your final description was also important since the description essentially dictates the meaning of the piece.

  2. My classmates gave helpful feedback about the clarity of my piece overall. So while I did not do much modification to the actual art, I was able to reflect on my writing description for the piece to make sure what I was communicating was clear.

    1. I took a similar approach to integrating my classmates comments and did not alter the actual piece too much, but rather made the description more clear.

    3. I did something similar in my revisions. Mostly, it was rewriting the description rather than changing the art too much. I went back to the abstract of the journal papers and made sure that it made sense with regards to my art.

  3. My classmates gave me really great suggestions, they advised me to focus on a topic, script what I will say, and make sure to have enthusiasm when I said it. I agree with them that all this would lead to a greater project so I am making sure to do the best I can to do all these things. Moreover, they suggested that I do something unique with the art so I have an idea that hopefully you all will like when you see it implemented.

    2. I definitely agree that you should hone in on one topic and script it but be sure to include some elements that make it appealing to the eye such as including magazine cutouts or abstract animations. Without these elements, I fear that your project may be too similar to any normal educational segment online about physics concepts.

  4. My classmates had many compliments for my work and liked the very simple way of representing Dr. Hasty’s work. Some suggestions were to tilt the pancreas sideways so that it was more recognizable, try to explore less concepts in the work to make it more clear, and to include three arrows for the three blood vessels instead of one. For my final project, I decided to completely remove both the plus sign (red cross) shapes and the pancreas. I thought that these items were not really necessary for the understanding of my point. Furthermore, I added two more arrows to make the message clearer and I reconstructed the entire image digitally on an iPad and used candy colors in order to make it eye-catching and to reflect on the junk food that may cause obesity.

    2. I like how you took this feedback and made your piece more focused. You made the final image much more clear by removing some details from the sketch and clarifying the main concepts that you were trying to show.

  5. My classmates suggested to make the descriptions behind the images clearer. I went back to the abstracts that my art was based off of and rewrote the descriptions of the art. I didn’t modify the actual art too much. I am going to address these concerns by including more clear and detailed descriptions of the work. I made sure to explain why some elements of the art were shown in the ways that they were.

    1. I think it is good that you are both integrating our suggestions and staying true to your original ideas for the piece. It can be hard to find that balance and I am excited to see how the new descriptions will better match the piece.

  6. My classmates mostly had positive responses to my artwork however some found it difficult to understand so I tried to make my description of my image clearer. This image goes along with the Hasty Lab’s review about immunometabolism in obesity so the target audience are educated peers in the field, who would most likely have a better foundation and therefore grasp of the concepts presented in my image.

  7. Overall, my classmates were pleased with my project, but there were corcerns surrounding the clarity of my project. In my description, I tried to include as much detail as possible without becoming too confusing. Hopefully upon reading the description as well as being able to see the finished work as a whole, I will have improved everyone’s understanding of both my project and reasons behind my approach to it.

  8. I’m definitely going to the advice of increasing the scientific aspect of my work like my classmates suggested. The idea that one topic, whether it’s mental illness or drug addiction, should be focused on is also advice I will take. The project will combine the art and the science aspect a lot more than the draft did because a scientific process will actually be displayed.

  9. My classmates like my ideas about getting inspirations from the wave, which made me super happy because I wasn’t sure if that’s too artsy for the project. According to the score they gave, I could tell that I needed to focus more on explaining the scientific mechanism behind the accumulation of macrophages so that people without scientific background could actually understand. I would improve this part by making the structure of my drawing clearer and provide more understandable explanations in description.

  10. The main concern that I received from my classmates was that the scene of a pond that I intended to depict would not effectively communicate the urgent situation of amphibians behind the picture. I did not have a solid plan as to how to express this urgency until I noticed that the living planet indexes looked like lightning bolts. From there, I added stormy clouds and the final scene became a storm over a pond. It was also one of my classmates who suggested using the data points to depict the trajectory of a frog jumping into a pond, which I ended up using.

    1. I like how you incorporated more aspects of the frog itself, which may make the image more interesting and understandable for audiences. It helps to really connect your ideas/message with your art.

  11. Some of my feedback involved using a more serious picture and using colors that more closely matched my tone. I chose to redo my imagery to create a darker scene with the DNA becoming more of the focus. I also chose do stray away from using the Calapari lab’s research individually, and focusing more on epigenetics and addiction in general.
